3 Races You Absolutely Must Try and Here’s Why
Outdoor recreation is soaring to new levels of popularity and Abilene's event organizers are hard at work coordinating quality races for visitors of all ability levels. Start with a summer 5k and work your way up to the most grueling of gravel races.
1. Rocket Run 5K - Sunday, July 4
Abilene is synonymous with Americana and what better way to kick off your Fourth of July than with a 5k? Registration starts at 6 am and the race begins at 7 am. Stick around for a full day of family-friendly old-fashioned Fourth of July activities and end the night with a stellar fireworks display.
2. Cowboy Up 5K and 2-mile walk - Saturday, August 14
Race organizer Steve Cathey is at it again! Known for hosting quality races, including the Eisenhower Marathon, this race has epic medals, and proceeds from the Cowboy Up 5k and 2-mile walk benefit Abilene High School Athletics.
If you’re an Abilene High School grad, this is one race you won’t want to miss. The class with the most entries receives a coveted traveling trophy that will be on display in the AHS trophy case and, of course, bragging rights.
3. Wild West Gravel Fest - Saturday, October 9
In its second year, this premier gravel race attracts riders from across the country! The Wild West Gravel Fest is a gravel bike race in Dickinson County, KS. With races ranging from 200km to 5k, Wild West Gravel Fest appeals to racers who are new to gravel and those who dare to push themselves to the extreme. Coordinator John Kollhoff loves to ride and have a good time, so make sure to stick around for the after-party at Old Abilene Town!
Bonus #4 - Eisenhower Marathon - Saturday, April 30, 2022
Save the date! The Eisenhower Marathon returns in 2022 with some exciting new changes. Stay tuned for updates!
