1. Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum
Excellent Museum
Mar 2023
If I understand correctly, this place has been revamped lately. They did an outstanding job. It tells a great story, great organization and choices as to what to show. They have some good video too. Very well laid out!!!!
As is typical, a place like this just overloads you with information, all of it good to know. Will visit again to make sure I remember it all! If you are passing by on Interstate 70, it really is a must stop.
2. Historic Seelye Mansion
A Highly Recommend Holiday Tour
Dec 2022
Our Holiday Tour exceeded our expectations!!! I took my family and extended family to Seelye Mansion for a holiday tour, and we all came away surprised, educated, and amazed. It was the best historical home tour we have experienced. The history of the family and the house, the collection of rare books and bowling, and the accessibility to share the home was unique. The tour guides were personable and knowledgeable on rich details, which helped make history visible. The owner even played the organ, and we sang carols together at the end of the tour. I highly recommend a visit if you are in the area, and if you are a historic home buff, I recommend planning a visit
3. Great Plains Theatre
You're a Good Theatre GPT!
Aug 2021
Saw "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown" (hence the title of this review!) Came to Abilene on a road trip and decided to see the show because we'd never seen it before. Community theater so wasn't sure what to expect. But, with community prices we were happy to support the arts - and we are so glad we did. This gem of a theater cleverly combines professional actors with local talent (hello young Woodstock! and I noticed Music Man did the same) to create a delightful professional production. No bad seats in the place. I highly recommend getting one of the Monster cookies. Oh-- and we happened to hit the show that included a cabaret afterwards. So, you might want to look for which show includes that bonus.
4. Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad
Train ride was great
Oct 2022
My grandkids enjoyed the train ride. My husband and I enjoyed it too. The ones running it were awesome. It was worth 2 1/2 hours there and 2 1/2 hours back home drive..
Thank you for such a great day!
5. Old Abilene Town
A gem of U.S. old west history!
Aug 2020
I visited in the early sunrise hours as part of a run-cation and cross-country trip. Not knowing what to expect as I ran along the roads of Abilene (2 miles south of I-70), I stumbled upon this little gem! It is the perfect little preservation of Old West history. Over a dozen buildings (rail station, hotel, shops, small buildings, a cemetery, etc) from the mid-19th century adorn the old Abilene town area. There are info placards that explain the history, as well as relevance of this location. Theres's also a staffed information center and gift shop.
A definite stop on a cross-county journey if you want to stretch the legs.
6. Greyhound Hall of Fame Museum
Greyt museum on greyhounds!
May 2022
Having owned a greyhound, I had always wanted to go to the hall of fame. It was a very interesting place with lots of information on the sport and its history. My favorite part was being greeted by two beautiful friendly greyhounds. If you have any interest at all, you should swing by and visit. Free admission and it relies on donations. It is across the street from the Eisenhower presidential library.
7. Dickinson County Heritage Center
Great Museum
Nov 2020
This is a great museum full of interesting stuff. The best part was riding the carousel, an original CW Parker version. So much fun! They also have lots of history books they're giving away for free, and a neat little gift store with stuff for kids and adults of all ages. If the weather is nice enough, you can visit the buildings in the back, and even if it's rainy or snowy, there is plenty to keep you occupied inside.
8. World's Largest Belt Buckle
Great condition
Mar 2023
The belt buckle is easy to find across from the Rose Garden (that is not in bloom in March). Going to see the Belt Buckle is a treat. It is in great condition with wonderful images around it. Climbing the staircase behind it affords a great view of the rodeo arena.
It also allows one to stand above the belt making for a wonderful photo op. Free and always open.
