Sunflower Summer Program Shines in Abilene
The 2024 Sunflower Summer program, organized Kansas Tourism and funded by the Kansas Legislature, brought families from across the state to Abilene, showcasing some of the town’s most celebrated attractions. With free admission to various educational and cultural sites, Abilene solidified its reputation as a must-visit destination for Kansans of all ages.
According to Kansas Tourism, the program’s impact was evident across participating Abilene attractions:
- Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad: 6,731 tickets claimed, with $114,945 reimbursed.
- Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum: 2,831 tickets claimed, generating $34,395 in reimbursement.
- Dickinson County Heritage Center: 1,824 tickets claimed, resulting in $10,176 reimbursed.
The Sunflower Summer program fosters learning, exploration, and family connection by introducing visitors to some of Kansas’ best attractions. In Abilene, participants learned about the life and legacy of President Eisenhower at his presidential library and museum, explored local heritage at the Dickinson County Heritage Center, and enjoyed scenic train rides aboard the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad – the State’s Official Heritage Railroad.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to welcome so many Kansas families through the Sunflower Summer program,” said Julie Roller Weeks, Director of the Abilene Convention & Visitors Bureau. “This initiative not only creates lasting memories but also introduces visitors to the unique attractions that make Abilene a top small-town destination.”
The program’s success underscores the power of collaboration between Kansas Tourism and local communities, driving both economic growth and family engagement. Statewide, the program saw incredible participation, with nearly 500,000 tickets claimed across more than 200 attractions.
“Sunflower Summer is a phenomenal, one-of-a-kind program that not only provides Kansas families with affordable summer vacations but also helps our youth develop a deeper connection to their home state,” added Roller Weeks. “We hope that the pride sparked through these experiences will continue to grow, encouraging students to build their futures right here in Kansas.”
