Plains, Trains and Cowboys: Experience the Spirit of the West in Abilene
If you’re looking for a weekend that captures the spirit of the American West, plan your trip to Abilene for Plains, Trains and Cowboys.
Held April 24 and 25, this two-day event brings together three of Abilene’s signature attractions for one unforgettable experience on the grounds of Old Abilene Town, Dickinson County Heritage Center, and the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad.
From live entertainment and hands-on activities to historic experiences and Western storytelling, this is a weekend designed for families, friends, and anyone who loves a good Western adventure.
A Wild West Experience Comes to Life
Step into the action as a full Wild West show brings legendary figures to life, including Buffalo Bill Cody, Wild Bill Hickok, Annie Oakley, and Dr. Gatling. With thrilling demonstrations, side saddle riders, and crowd-favorite performances, the energy of the frontier takes center stage throughout the weekend.
At Old Abilene Town, visitors can enjoy gunfight reenactments, Can-Can dances, and interactive experiences that bring the cattle town era back to life. It’s a chance to walk the same streets where history happened and see it play out right in front of you.
Music, Storytelling, and Western Entertainment
Throughout the weekend, live music and storytelling add to the atmosphere.
Evening performances at the Old Abilene Town Pavilion feature The Lazy Wayne Band on Friday and Rusty Rierson on Saturday, along with the Serenity String Band. Inside Heritage Hall, cowboy poets Ron Wilson and Zerf share stories of the West through poetry, while The Fiddlers bring bluegrass favorites to the stage.
It’s the kind of entertainment that invites you to slow down, listen, and enjoy the moment.
