America Likes Patriotism: Visit Kansas’ First America 250 Mural in Abilene
Abilene has never been a community that waits on the sidelines, and America 250 is no exception.
In August 2024, Abilene proudly unveiled Kansas’ first America 250 mural, taking an early lead in celebrating the nation’s 250th birthday while creating a must-see stop for patriotic travelers.
Located above General Dwight D. Eisenhower VFW Post #3279 overlooking Little Ike Park in historic downtown Abilene, the colorful mural celebrates America’s founding, military service, and patriotism, all in the hometown of President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
And yes, the timing was intentional.
Rather than waiting until 2026, Abilene got an early start, creating a patriotic photo stop and a place for visitors and residents alike to celebrate America’s story as excitement builds toward the nation’s 250th birthday. By launching Kansas’ first America 250 mural in 2024, Abilene embraced the opportunity to inspire patriotic travel, encourage photo sharing, and help tell the story of America 250 from the Heart of America.
And what better place to celebrate America than Abilene?
As the boyhood hometown of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Allied Commander during World War II and the 34th President of the United States, Abilene has long been connected to the American story. From the end of the historic Chisholm Trail to the beginning of Eisenhower’s Interstate Highway System, history comes to life here.
Painted by Kansas mural artist Mindy Allen, the mural features patriotic imagery, including tributes to America’s military branches and the Betsy Ross flag honoring the original 13 colonies. Positioned in the heart of downtown, it has quickly become a favorite backdrop for patriotic selfies and photos.
While you are here, make it part of your Abilene adventure. Explore the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum & Boyhood Home, stroll through Old Abilene Town, shop downtown, and discover why Abilene continues to be recognized as one of America’s favorite historic small towns!
