Sunflower Summer Is Coming… and Abilene Is Ready
Summer adventures are almost here, and one of Kansas families’ favorite programs is making its return.
The 2026 Sunflower Summer program will run Thursday, July 9 through Sunday, August 2, giving Kansas students and their families the chance to explore museums, historic sites, zoos, nature centers, and attractions across the state for free. Through the Sunflower Summer app, eligible Kansas families can unlock memorable day trips, discover new places, and experience some of the best attractions Kansas has to offer.
And yes… Abilene plans to be part of the fun!
While the official list of participating attractions has not yet been announced by Kansas Tourism, we can promise this: Abilene families and visitors will have reasons to add America’s favorite small town to their summer bucket list.
We are not quite ready to share which attractions will be participating just yet, but trust us, they will be worth the trip!
Let’s just say… if your family enjoys history, hands-on experiences, iconic Kansas attractions, scenic experiences, or a little adventure, you’ll want to keep an eye on Abilene.
Located right off I-70 in the Heart of America, Abilene makes an easy and memorable summer road trip. Whether your crew loves presidential history, Wild West stories, train rides, quirky museums, or exploring somewhere new together, there is no shortage of ways to fill a summer day.
Spend time exploring the community’s award-winning attractions, stroll historic downtown, grab lunch at a local restaurant, enjoy a sweet treat, or shop for unique Kansas finds while you’re here. Better yet, make it more than a quick stop and turn your Sunflower Summer adventure into an overnight getaway.
Abilene has a way of turning a simple day trip into a memory-making experience.
For now, consider this your friendly reminder to start watching for updates, charge your phone, and get ready to download the Sunflower Summer app. The official attraction list will be announced later this summer, and we have a feeling you’ll want Abilene on your travel list!
